Simon Cowell Quits American Idol

Host Ryan Seacrest, with American Idol judge's Randy Jackson and Simon Cowell arrive to American Idol's Annual Top 12 party held at the Astra West/Pacific Design Center on March 8, 2007 in Los Angeles, CaliforniaIt's official: Simon Cowell is leaving American Idol.

The judge fans love to hate made the announcement to TV critics gathered in Pasadena for their bi-annual press tour, one day before American Idol premieres its ninth season. This will be Cowell's last.

Elsewhere in Idol changes, Ellen DeGeneres joins the judging panel this season in place of Paula Abdul. (Should Ellen be taking Cowell's departure personally?)

In fact, Cowell is leaving Idol to start another singing competition on Fox -- The X Factor, a British talent show that launched Leona Lewis' career.

It will be interesting to see how DeGeneres reacts to this news. In previous interviews, she's said, "If Simon goes, I go!"
